Well .. I've done it! I ran my first half marathon .. in Las Vegas .. the day before my 30th birthday! It was truly an unforgettable experience. All the hard work I've put in this year and to end the year with a goal to run the 1/2 Marathon.
Las Vegas was the place to run my 1st simply because it's my second home and there's no other place to have a birthday celebration at than in sin city!
I was scheduled to start at corral 29 because I had registered my predicted finish time at 2 hours & 45 minutes. On the day of the expo I decided that with all the training I had done up to the run .. I think I could actually run faster than my predicted time. So I changed my corral to 21 with a predicted time of 2:15-2:30. I was glad I changed it because I finished the 1/2 Marathon in 2 hours 25 minutes and 38 seconds!
Las Vegas in December is like the weather in San Francisco .. 60's .. with occasional winds. Starting when the sunset was definitely cold and windy. There were wind advisories that evening. Running north of the strip was easy because there were winds that pushed you forward. But when running back south from downtown Fremont -- that was hard because the winds were pushing against me.
Towards the last 2 miles of the run .. my left calve started to cramp up in pain .. the pain intermittently came. But at the last 25 feet to the finish line .. that's when the cramp turned into a pain that made me limp across the finish line and had a medical team member quickly grabbed me and asked if I was ok. At that time I remember very vividly .. I was crying .. crying because of the pain .. and also crying because I had finished my first half marathon!
It was an unforgettable and motivating weekend for me. I will never forget this feeling of accomplishment.
I will post more pictures from the run as soon as I get them .. I also attached a GoPro on my head to document the run as well .. but the camera decided not to record the finish line which I am still upset about. But as soon as I get the video together I will post it and share it with you guys.
I had an entourage come take photos of my run .. the picture above was done by Shun.
